There were no objections when Slade pulled up at the base of a sand hill at dusk. Small fires were quickly laid, horses unsaddled, and soogans unrolled. "Do you think the rustlers know we're following them?"

Slade nodded to the speaker. "They'd be fools if they didn't, and John Daughtery is no fool. But we'll know more later tonight."

Garth Smith looked up after dropping a johnnycake into grease sputtering in a fire-blackened spider, a three-legged skillet sitting on the edge of the coals. "What do you mean by that?"

Ware answered, "Slade's Apache brother, Nana."

"That's right. I'd forgotten all about him. Where is he?" Garth Smith glanced around suspiciously. "I haven't seen him lately."

Two or three men paused and looked up from their own chores. Slade spoke up. "I expect him in tonight. He's been following the rustlers since he left Joseph and me up north." The other men had moved in and were listening. Slade added, "So don't no one get spooked when he comes in."

"Are you sure you can trust him?"

Slade looked at the man who asked the question. "His folks took me in when I was eight. Nana and me have been brothers for sixteen years." He paused, and a droll smile curled his lips. "Yes. I can trust him."

His reply satisfied everyone, even Aaron and Garth Smith. They returned to their bedrolls and soon the rattling of snores filled the night.
